Flights Delayed at 40 Airports Due to Widespread Capacity Cuts by FAA

Washington, DC – Air travelers at some of the nation’s busiest airports will start feeling the impact of the government shutdown in flight cancellations and longer delays. On Wednesday, November 5, USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy announced that “high volume” areas will have their air traffic cut by 10% beginning Friday in a proactive measure to keep the “air space safe.”

The FAA reports widespread staffing shortages as air traffic controllers face over a month of missed paychecks due to the government shutdown. Many have called out sick, and some have taken on second jobs.  According to FAA administrator Bryan Bedford, data compiled by pilots show a concerning rise in controller fatigue.

"The data is telling us to do more," he said. "We want to reassure American travelers that it is absolutely safe to be traveling in our skies."
